The Pelican Brief

Ann Althouse has it right. The shock and awe of reading the pundits
who panned Jindal, came from the surprise at their overt racist
comments.
Sorry, can't post Althouse link right now. Check back.

UPDATE: Here's the link.

Of pelicans and politics

Shocked and awed by the harsh response of the conservative pundits to Bobby Jindal's opposition response to the Obamamessiah. Of course, they may've just been cranky, having wasted all that time watching the One. We didn't. We DVR'ed Homeland Security USA and NCIS and cut straight to the chase. [By the way, how many times do we have to tell you to watch Homeland Security USA? That 300 dollar sandwich! Never mess with the Beagle].
From our own little part of Dixieland, where the major city and county of the state are both facing corruption charges worthy of ...Chicagoland, it was nice to hear that in Louisiana it is no longer "politics as usual." Couldn't help but be envious.
Although the FOX All-Stars panned the non-theatrical setting of the governor's mansion, we couldn't help but stare at the Louisiana state flag. Yes, the pelican is the state bird, but why THAT particular image? Hint: haven't you seen it before carved in marble or in a mosaic under an altar? How about here.
Weren't you subconsciously mumbling something to yourself? Something from, of all people, St. Thomas Aquinas? Something that went ....
Pie Pelicane, Iesus Domine. O loving Pelican! O Jesus, Lord. Unclean I am, but cleanse me in Thy Blood; Of which a single drop, for sinners split, Is ransom for a world's entire guilt.
Ah, the REAL response to the Obamamessiah. Now, we're talking. There is only One who saves us, and by his own blood no less. How masterful....the opposition message staged in Louisiana on Fat Tuesday. Those who panned Jindal, don't know much about the real response to idolatry. For that matter, they don't know much about real stagecraft.
Bonus: Another translation... Once a nesting pelican gashed herself to blood, For the preservation of her starving brood; Now heal me with your blood, take away my guilt, All the world is ransomed if one drop is split.
Extra Bonus: Haven't yet seen Mira Nair's excellent Mississippi Marsala featuring a young Denzel Washington? All about different aspects of yearning for one's homeland, making a new start in a new land, and, well, racism. Specifically, the film follows a family of Indian background exiled from their home in Uganda (for not being Black African) and making a new life in Mississippi were they are subject to prejudice from both the white and black population. (Warning: movie is not for the kiddies).

Pie Pelicane, Iesu Domine

More thoughts later on Jindal's very good speech last night.
Meanwhile, some hints.... no coincidence that the pelican is on the
Louisiana flag...

Men of Honor, Part II

Remember how way back on December 7, 2008 we posted:
"And speaking of men of honor, two men who have their Oogedy Booedy in the right place: Congressman Anh “Joseph” Cao and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg. Anh “Joseph” Cao, the Vietnamese immigrant, philosophy professor and pro-lifer, who won a seat in Congress representing Louisiana, beating out a more widely-known Democratic opponent who has a penchant for hiding bribe money in his Frigidaire."
Well, it seems that Congressman Cao is still sticking to his guns and voting his conscience,
This past Friday, I voted against the so-called stimulus bill. I wanted a bill that would stimulate the economy without wasteful spending and that would answer the needs of my district. Unfortunately, this wasn't it. Voting no was a tough decision -- my most difficult yet in Congress -- but I believe it was the right decision.
President Barack Obama's intentions with this bill were good, but the result is loaded with big government spending and dubious initiatives that will do little to help the average American. The costs of the stimulus bill far outweigh the benefits. Even the White House's own analysis ranked the 2nd District dead last in terms of the number of jobs created yet the bill will increase 2nd District citizens' share of our national debt to more than $38,000 per person.
The passage of the stimulus bill was neither fair nor transparent. The entire process was characterized by traditional Washington back-room dealing and was intended to ram through a trillion-dollar spending frenzy with as little debate and scrutiny as possible.
Some will say I bowed to political pressure to "fall in line" with the Republican Party. This could not be further from the truth. My first and only responsibility is to the people of the 2nd District; I am committed to working with Republicans and Democrats alike to pass important legislation, such as the critically needed children's health insurance program we passed earlier this year.
As your representative, I have worked tirelessly to bring jobs back home, securing $129 million to assist local hospitals and moving forward the backlog of local FEMA projects to restore basic services like firehouses, health clinics and schools. If we can get even a fraction of these projects off the ground, it will do far more for the 2nd District than the stimulus bill.

Personhood of all human beings

BISMARCK, North Dakota, February 19, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The rights of unborn children gained a victory in North Dakota on Tuesday, as the state House of Representatives voted to recognize the personhood of all human beings, from conception.
"For purposes of interpretation of the constitution and laws of North Dakota, it is the intent of the legislative assembly that an individual, a person, when the context indicates that a reference to an individual is intended, or a human being includes any organism with the genome of homo sapiens," reads part of The Personhood of Children Act (House Resolution 1572).
Led by American Life League Associate group North Dakota Life League, North Dakota's Personhood Movement celebrated the passage of the bill, introduced by State Rep. Dan Ruby, in a 51-41 vote. A grassroots personhood campaign had spurred the outcome, with thousands of calls asking legislators to support the bill in its unaltered form.
Fifteen other states are currently pursuing personhood legislation.
The Senate vote is expected in the next two to three weeks. North Dakota will become the first state in the Union with personhood legislation if the measure passes the Senate.

The Pope speaks of Life to Pelosi

(18 Feb 09 - RV) Following the General Audience the Holy Father briefly greeted Mrs Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, together with her entourage.
His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church’s consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in cooperation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development.

More Hope!

More hope for the future. Or should we have titled this entry "Meet the Kids Who'll Be Paying Off the Generational Theft Bill."

Thursday, February 12, 2009

We have seen the future....

And it's not completely bleak. Here are some more photos from March for Life 2009. There is hope yet.

Mourning Italian Style

"Rome's mayor, Gianni Alemanno, announced the Colosseum would be lit all night Tuesday in a sign of mourning for "a life that could have and should have been saved." The Colosseum, a symbol of Italy's fight against capital punishment since 1999, has been lit up every time a death sentence is commuted somewhere in the world or a country abolishes capital punishment."
More here for the Vatican's response to the killing of Eluana Englaro.

Death Italian Style

Under Mussolini, the trains ran on time.
Under Napolitano, death arrives on time, if not ahead a little bit ahead of schedule.
Eluana Englaro died today. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Very curious that the clinic was doping her with sedatives, inducing death before the Italian Parliament could act to stop this murder.
Need to brush up on the nature and kinds of cooperation with evil? Look here.

Eluana and the animals

Over the weekend we all saw that pitiful footage of the black lab trembling in the frigid, icy water waiting rescue. How happy we all were to hear the dog was saved.
Why then so much empathy for an animal and so little for Eluana who's father is attempting to starve her to death in Italy.
Perhaps everyone has a mistaken idea about death by starvation. Do we all collectively think it is like hypothermia where we slowly drift to sleep and death only to "wake up" in heaven?
The death that Eluana's father proposes for her is much more like the poor canine and feline friends in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Locked in their homes or chained to fences, without food or water, tongues swelling and dying of thirst. The American public did not tolerate such cruelty to animals. Many, many volunteers worked tirelessly to rescue these creatures.
You can save Eulana.
Please contact the Embassy of Italy at (202) 612-4400, or (202) 612-4444 asking them to communicate to the President of Italy, Giorgio Napolitano that he should IMMEDIATELY sign the decree which would prevent Eluana’s inhuman dehydration death.
Keep up to date here.

Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves

Cher is reported to have said that Republican rule "nearly killed her."
We think the Generational Theft Bill of the Democrat ruled House and Senate is intended to kill the United States. It's not too late to call and tell them, "Pork is only for Cuban Sandwiches!"
Friday bonus: Cher doing her Tramp thing.

Can I really create 5 million jobs out of thin air? Yes, I can! - Nancy Pelosi
And so ends our study of the marketing in DC Metro system during March for Life Week 2009.
Marching orders for tonight:
Pray that the Generational Theft Bill, er, Stimulus bill dies a horrible death in the Senate (Don't go wobbly now, Republicans!). Remember, pork is only for Cuban Sandwiches!

Marketing Breast Cancer

Another installment in our on-going study of marketing in the DC Metro during March for Life Week 2009.
Hmm...it looks like the folks at Avon want you to walk for 2 days in May to end breast cancer. Obviously, March for Lifers are made of tougher stuff because we march for 1 day in the middle of winter. Anyhow, back to the study.
The Avon people claim "an extraordinary experience of a lifetime awaits you!" An interesting choice of words considering the abortion-breast cancer link. The traumatic "extraordinary experience" of abortion is perhaps the leading cause of the very cancer these ladies are trying to prevent.
Wouldn't it be simpler just to eradicate abortion and thereby prevent the possible cause of breast cancer?

George Soros Marketing One Child Policy

If Nancy Pelosi is for the Contraceptive State, can a One Child Policy be far behind?
George Soros, er, Moveon.org, is already out there marketing the One Child Lifestyle (gives one more quality time for fitness, volunteer work with Vets, and reading to one's child in Spanish....hmmm, doesn't mention that with all the money you'll be saving with your one child, you'll finally be able to afford the finer things in life like wagyu steak ). Pictures paint a thousand words. This ad and many more like it were all over the D.C. metro system during March for Life Week 2009.
Making the USA more like China, is this the Hopenchange everyone was waiting for?
