A Community that Cares for its Neighbors

Diocese of Lafayette is claiming 70 unclaimed bodies at the Lafayette Coroner's office and giving them a proper burial on April 28th.
The intent of this project is to acknowledge the value and dignity of every human life. To show the homeless, and those who feel forgotten among us today that we are community that cares for its neighbors. No one will go unclaimed in Lafayette.
A work of mercy and a reminder of the dignity of every human life. Find out how you can help them cover expenses.

And now for something completely different

The Return of Human Sacrifice.

Well, at least the threat of it. Fr. Barron makes the case that the scapegoat-sacrifice is is always lurking just beneath the surface of culture, even our Western Culture (which is increasingly reminiscent of pagan Roman Culture).

What haunted me as I watched The Hunger Games was that the instinct for human sacrifice is never far from the surface and that it could easily exist alongside of tremendous cultural and technological sophistication. I suspect that this film is disturbingly prophetic. We might comfort ourselves with the thought that such things could never happen here, but as we in the West enter increasingly into a secular, post-Christian cultural space, we place ourselves in danger of reverting to wicked forms of behavior and social organization.
Read it all here. Brave New World, indeed.

The End of Federalism?

Day 3. Getting to the heart of the matter, which is the Obama Administration reshaping the Federal Government.

Althouse picks up on this bit while reviewing the arguments:

The SG says no! The states have a choice, he says, to which Alito responds: "But if that's the case, then there's nothing left of federalism."
That's a dramatic statement, and the SG only natters away about how there are political constraints on Congress. That is, there's nothing left of judicially enforceable federalism, but we've still got the supposed political safeguards of federalism (i.e., the way Congress will, on its own, restrain itself from too much imposition on the states). This is the SG's theme throughout the arguments this week: It is sufficient to let Congress do whatever it wants.
Hmmm...the Mandate if not repealed will kill Federalism. Oh, and President Obama wants to be even friendlier with the Russians

Not the change we were looking for.

Long Black Veil and the HHS Mandate

Althouse on Day 3 of Obamacare arguments..
Are we supposed to go through the whole 2700 pages? Ha ha. Why should they? The members of Congress didn't. Obama didn't. (Signing the bill, he said:"... you know the feeling of signing your name to pages of barely understandable fine print").

And who can ever forget: "We have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it"? If the Court drags the whole thing down, no one will ever know what the hell was in it. And I mean no one. Absolutely no one on the face of the earth knows the entire text, and no one will ever know.
And this reminds us of the Long Black Veil...

She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody but me.

Extra Bonus. Johnny Cash and Joni Mitchell.

Highlights and Conspiracy

Univ. of Wisconsin Law Professor Ann Althouse has her Top Ten Highlights of the March 27th Obamacare Oral Arguments.

One Child Policy, Forced Sterilization and HHS Mandate

How are all of those things related? Read Jonathan Witt on "HHS Mandate Fits Bigger Pattern" over at the Acton Institute Blog. All about Obama's appointment of Science and Technology Policy Director John Holdren, who happens to be rather in favor of forced sterilization. On Holdren, Jonathan Witt writes:
If you view fertility as a “human predicament” from which we desperately need to find “a way out,” you’re more likely to go looking for some politically feasible policy to limit the number of mouths. The Obama administration may have found just such a politically feasible policy in the mandate to coerce Americans to cover the costs of other people’s contraception. Time will tell.

Day Two

of Obamacare arguments at the Supreme Court. Stay tuned.

Howard Dean on the HHS Mandate

Now this is interesting. Former head of the DNC talking to Charlie Rose about the Mandate:

On Monday’s “CBS This Morning,” former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean broke with Democratic Party ranks once again on the issue of Obamacare. But this time, he did it in terms of how he thinks the Supreme Court will view the law.
Host Charlie Rose asked Dean, a physician and former Democratic presidential candidate, if he thought the individual mandate would ultimately be declared unconstitutional.
“I actually think that’s what they’re most likely to do before, of course, we’ve heard any arguments,” Dean, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, replied. “I can’t imagine how they’re going to decide this isn’t right yet. And you’ll have lawyers talking about the arcane legal question. But yeah, I don’t believe they’ll support that. And they certainly aren’t going to do it from the bench today.”

Abortion Common in New York

Not rare but very, very common. Almost more common than live births in some parts of New York City.
Abortion is not rare. It is not just something that women can resort to for that once-in-a-lifetime mistake. Abortion is commonplace in New York. More than half of all abortions in New York over the last ten years were repeat abortions. In large swaths of New York City, more than half of all viable pregnancies end in abortion. And abortion is not without consequences for women’s physical and mental health, and for their ability to have healthy pregnancies in the future. Americans and New Yorkers, even those who believe that women should have a legal right to abortion, are not indifferent toward abortion and are shocked to find out how common it is in New York City.

Photos of the Rally for Religious Freedom -UPDATED

Kathryn Jean Lopez has a round-up of Rally photos over at the National Review.
Photos of DC, Chicago, Dallas, Manhattan, Birmingham, to name a few cities.

UPDATE
The Anchoress also has a photo round-up going on over at her place.
She really likes this photo.

"We fed you. We taught you. We nursed you. We visited you. Keep our conscience free."

And here's a write-up in the National Catholic Register.

Obama-Sebelius Death Pact

She doesn't quite put it that way, but the Anchoress asks:
How can anyone love death that much, without it somehow demonstrating a hatred for life, a desire to over-control — which is really a desire to play at being God?

Today's the Day to Rally

Nationwide Stand Up for Religious Freedom Rally at noon.
Here are some tips:

Check the weather report...Mom and Dad bring the kids...treat them to ice cream afterwards... make a day of it... bring Uncle Ed who can't drive...Grandma Mary who is too fragile to attend can say some prayers at home...carpool with friends...

Just do it!

More tips:
  • Attend pre-rally Mass or religious service (the ol' one-two Pray and March Combo).
  • Dress in layers.
  • Bring a hat and sunscreen lotion.
  • Those with allergies bring your tissues (pollen is everywhere in Oogedy Boogedy Land).
  • Bring plenty of bottle water (an extra bottle to share is always nice and neighborly).
  • The rally is at noon so you low-blood sugar types and those with children bring snacks.
  • Coins for parking meters.
  • Backpack or tote bag to carry everything and a plastic bag to cart away litter.
  • BRING A CAMERA OR VIDEO RECORDER; TAKE PHOTOS OF THE EVENT. This last one is very important because when 1,000 or more people show up at the Rally and your local media only reports 10 people were at the event or the local newspaper only displays a photo (on back page) of a close-up of 1 rally participant you will have visual  proof that the media is backing the Obama HHS Mandate by deliberately deceiving the public in regards to the public disapproval of the Mandate.

States' Rights

Alabama Attorney General joins legal challenge against HHS Mandate.
“This dispute over the contraception mandate is the natural consequace of of Obamacare’s individual mandate, which my office is also challenging in court, along with many other states.,” he continued. “If the federal government can mandate that everyone has to buy something, then the government can require us to buy something even if we are morally opposed to paying for it. That is why I hope the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare as unconstitutional.”
Strange continue, “The people of Alabama have recognized the importance of [religious freedom] and have enshrined it in our Constitution as well. Alabama law does not allow anyone to be forced to offer a product that is against his or her religious beliefs or conscience… The issue is clear: either Alabamians and Americans around the country will be allowed to exercise their religious freedom and say no to something they disagree with, or they won’t. We hope the Obama administration will listen and adopt a position that supports our first freedom, rather than undermine it.”

Prepare as you would if you were attending the March for Life in DC, even though this even it is only 4 days after the first day of Spring.

Yes, we'll rally round the flag, boys, we'll rally once again,Shouting the battle cry of freedom,We will rally from the hillside, we'll gather from the plain,Shouting the battle cry of freedom!

The Dubliner Defiled

President Obama never missing an opportunity to stick it to the Catholics, once again says "Up Your Arse" to them on the Feast of St. Patrick.
Just a day after the Friday Night Document Dump that notes the Administration has decided that colleges must provide students with insurance that covers contraception, the One Who Will Save Women visits the venerable DC pub The Dubliner for a St. Patrick’s Day pint.

First the honorary degree at Notre Dame University, home of the Fighting Irish, and now on the sacred day of St. Patrick, Patron of Ireland and Irish Catholics, he visits the popular DC pub The Dubliner, the beloved meet-up spot for hungry, thirsty Marchers after the Annual March for Life in Washington DC.
Surely, no coincidence.

His staff knows that Pro-Lifers have long booked the banquet rooms at the next door Phoenix Park Hotel, also owned by the Dubliner, for Pro-Life events around the Annual March for Life.

He's picking a fight. He'll have one. We're all Irish now!

Remember....he fights mean, "if they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun."

Cling to Our Constitutional Law and Freedoms

Moroccans outraged over suicide of 16-year-old girl who was forced to marry her rapist

Amina Filali swallowed rat poison to protest marriage to man who attacked her a year earlier

Got that. Girl in Morocco forced to marry her rapist. Read it again. She "swallowed rat poison." Keep that in mind.
We must vigorously defend our US Constitutional Laws which are based on the Natural Law and Judeo-Christian values.

Visualizing the One Percent

And now we interrupt our bitter clinging for a brief musical interlude.
Instapundit redirected our attention to the new Bruce Springsteen recording which we had been ignoring [to think our ticket and cd sales helped make the Boss what he is today...defender of the Obama Administration] by highlighting this article in PJMedia.
Murder, Incorporated: Bruce Springsteen Goes All-In with #OWS Multimillionaire pop artist and political mascot wishes death upon his fellow One Percenters.
What PJMedia failed to do is illustrate this article with some nice visuals. So here, let us help them.
This is what the One Percent looks like.

Hey, it's only the Windsor Horse Show in England, I mean, it's not like owning a whole stable full of polo ponies.
Nothing so decadent as this, right? Right?

Would you like to contribute a dollar?

Know how they ask you at the supermarket or retail store, "would you like to contribute a dollar to [fill in the blank with known charity]?" when you're ready to check out. Well, now we know the mandatory contribution you will be charged each month under Obamacare.

Indeed pro-lifers have long known that the health care law, specifically Section 1303, would require enrollees in the health care exchanges to pay a separate monthly surcharge for abortion coverage.
With the final HHS rules set in stone, the surcharge is a dollar.
More at the Daily Caller.

So did you get that? You, all of you, are going to pay a dollar a month for abortion coverage. Mandatory monthly fee to pay for abortion.

This is how the One Who Will Save Women can be so charitable to women.

Works of Mercy

Pope Benedict's will be preforming a corporal work of mercy this Lent by visiting the prisoners of the captive island nation of Cuba.

Keep in mind this particular story and pray that he can help ransom the captive Alan Gross, a veteran American aid worker who has been a prisoner in Cuba since December 3, 2009.

Alan Gross and his wife Judy are pictured (left) and Rabbi Arthur Schneier and Alan Gross are pictured (right). | AP Photos
The wife of American aid worker Alan Gross, who’s been imprisoned in Cuba for more than two years, said Tuesday she is “disappointed” that President Barack Obama hasn’t responded to her plea to discuss her husband’s case.
Gross, 62 and suffering from health problems, was initially jailed without charges for 14 months and was then convicted by the Cuban courts of attempting to subvert the government. Gross was working in Cuba on a humanitarian mission as a subcontractor for USAID: to improve internet access for the Jewish communities on the island nation.

Group 1 Carcinogens and Cancer

Yes, the dreaded C-Word, I mean the other C-Word, not the one they have been talking about in the news with regards to Bill Maher.

Remember our little thought experiment from the other day? The common story of a gal taking the Pill from 18 to 30 years of age. Well as it turns out, according to a Mayo Clinic report in 2006:
women who use hormonal contraceptives for a minimum of four years before having their first full-term pregnancy have a 52% higher risk of developing breast cancer
Hmmm... In our story the gal was on the Pill for 12 years. Know of any loved ones in this situation.

You mean you never heard about this Mayo Clinic report on the nightly news?

Read more about it here. Or here.

Is this what the Obama Administration has in mind?

Pretty good summary of the Castro Administration..
The lack of economic freedom and opportunity makes it difficult for ordinary Cubans to get by on the rations and meager salaries paid out by the regime, so many of them are forced to hustle just to make ends meet. This is a tragedy in a country that — though seriously marred by consecutive corrupt and repressive regimes — once was among the richest in the region. In fact, the fertile but mostly uncultivated land, the majestic but often dilapidated buildings, the lack of stores with quality goods other than rum and cigars (and the ubiquitous Che Guevara T-shirts for the historically illiterate), and the general absence of commerce and industry are a testament to the utter failure of Castro’s revolution.
More on Jacob Mchangama's visit to Cuba here.

Oh, and one of the consequences of being "forced to hustle"to make ends meet...increase in prostitution. Hey, is this why the One Who Will Save Women wants free birth control?

Group 1 Carcinogens and You

Thought experiment for the day.
Let’s say your 18 year old daughter goes off to college with a prescription for birth control pills (a Type 1 Carcinogen*) for her acne or to, you know, regulate her menstrual cycle. Conveniently, it also provides birth control for when she starts hooking up with guys. She’s still taking it when she meets that bum guy she eventually gets engaged to at 26. Finally, they get married at 30. Wonderful grandchild follows despite being related to that extraordinary meathead son-in-law.
So let’s count. That’s roughly 12 years of birth control pills. To put it another way that’s 12 years of ingesting a Type 1 Carcinogen.

Hmm....how many years does a Navy welder have to work in the Navy yard before having enough exposure to asbestos to eventually contract mesothelioma?
Where are the trial lawyers? John Edwards call your office!
P.S. The One Who Will Save Women wants all the gals to have access to free Type 1 Carcinogens birth control pills. Or does it just mean he's in the pocket of Big Pharma?
*Group 1 Carcinogens, ever hear of them? Some Type 1s you might be more familiar with: arsenic, asbestos, benzene (a main ingredient in napalm), cigarettes, formaldehyde, mustard gas, plutonium-239, radioiodines, to name a few.

The Enemy of Humanity & the HHS Mandate...

They're in cahoots!

Powerful clip of Gloria Purvis discussing how the HHS Mandate is anti-Woman and a tool of the Enemy of Humanity.

On February 27, the Catholic Information Center in Washington DC and the women's web-magazine Altcatholicah cosponsored the panel discussion, "Women Challenging the HHS Mandate." Here, panelist Gloria Purvis discusses how the HHS Mandate is anti-Woman and how Catholics need to get speak up on the issue. Go to the CIC site to view the full panel discussion.

Umm....they haven't gotten the message that The One Who Will Save Woman has declared this the Year of the Subsidized Woman.

Whither Right to Privacy?

Roe v. Wade + Obama Administration HHS Mandate = Big Brother is watching you!

Nor is it even the distinctively American wrinkle the Republic of Paperwork has given to governmentalized health care, under which the “right to privacy” the Supreme Court claimed to have discovered in Griswold v. Connecticut and Roe v. Wade will now lead to thousands and thousands of self-insuring employers keeping computer records of the morning-after pills and herpes medication racked up by Miss Jones on reception.

Get that? Now your health insurers will really know all about you.

Thanks to Fr. Z for pointing this from Mark Steyn's latest column.

Ain't No Fluke That it Points Back to the White House

Former White House Communications Director Anita "I love Chairman Mao" Dunn is now representing Sandra Fluke.

Full story at Daily Caller (via Bill O'Reilly) Snippet:

SKDKnickerbocker, a PR agency whose managing director is former White House Communications Director Anita Dunn, is now representing Fluke. Dunn is perhaps best known for her attack on Fox News and for naming Chinese revolutionary and Communist leader Mao Tse Tung as one of her favorite political philosophers back in 2009.

Courage

A seated President is openly demonizing our best and brightest, stoking the embers of class-envy, courting mob violence and racial animus, ruling by fiat, bypassing Congress, brazenly defying court orders, and publicly expressing admiration for the "efficiency" of totalitarianism.

But did he pray for the repeal of the HHS Mandate?

CNA is reporting that Vice President Biden visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico. Surely, he knows that OL of Guadalupe is Patroness of the Unborn.

Do you think he enlisted her for help in repealing the HHS Mandate?

Stunned

Stunned and saddened when we heard the news this morning at Ace of Spades HQ.

Blogger Neptunus Lex, RIP.

"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me."
 -- John Paul Jones

Hunters and the Hunted and the HHS Mandate

Good piece about cooperation in evil and the recent HHS Mandate, using analogy of the Fugitive Slave Act.

Using our analogy of the Fugitive Slave Act, therefore, we will refuse formal cooperation. We will not be of one will with the slave owner and the bounty hunter, nor will we actually participate in the capture of slaves.
They are human beings in our eyes and treating them otherwise devalues both them and us.
We will likewise not render the immediate material cooperation of providing the kind of aid to the bounty hunters without which the capture of slaves could not be accomplished.
We thus cannot provide oral or written information about where to find slaves or funds for general bounty hunting, because unless we’re self-deceived, we know exactly what the money would be used for: manacles and shackles to capture and transport slaves, possibly to their deaths.

The Subsidized Woman

The Year of the Subsidized Woman is going to make us a Nation of Mean Girls, says Dr. Helen Smith, and she's right.
The mean girls of today, like Sandra Fluke and her comrades, buddy up with the mean girl groups like Planned Parenthood and the Democratic party to isolate and bully their targets into submission. Limbaugh fell for it hook, line and sinker. And not only did he fall for the mean girl routine and apologize, but he let the left use his morality against him: somewhere Alinsky is laughing. After all, didn’t Limbaugh just fall for his fourth rule? “Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules. You can kill them with this…”

The Man and the Ladies in White

Since Cuba already subsidizes everyone they are not celebrating with Obama, the One Who Will Save Women, proclamation of the Year of the Subsidized Woman.

However, Carlos M.N. Eire, author and professor, hopes that Pope Benedict will meet with the Ladies in White during the upcoming papal visit to Cuba, so that these Ladies... who don't need the government for anything...can get the recognition they deserve for their on-going fight for freedom on that Communist island.

Snippet from Eire's Modest Petition:

I have but one request: please meet with the Ladies in White while you are in Cuba. They have asked for this themselves, through your nuncio Monsignor Bruno Musaro, with whom they met a few weeks ago. Bless them with your presence, please, Most Holy Father. They are brave beyond belief; but, subjected as they are to constant physical and mental abuse, and to the constant threat of imprisonment or death, they are in dire need of your blessing.

As you well know, they are often attacked and beaten and prevented from attending church; sometimes they've even been attacked inside churches. They are living out the gospel, at a high cost, laying their lives down for their brethren. Like the Canaanite woman who cried out to Jesus, 'Lord, help me!' or the woman who touched the hem of Jesus’s robe in hope of a cure, they are reaching out, full of faith, begging against all odds. In an island where everyone has been turned into a beggar, they beg for the rarest and most precious gift of all: your presence.

Ladies in White vs The Subsidized Woman, what a contrast.

Love Song of Barack H. Obama

Vetting the One Who Will Save Women.

In 1998, a small Chicago theater company staged a play titled The Love Song of Saul Alinsky, dedicated to the life and politics of the radical community organizer whose methods Obama had practiced and taught on Chicago’s South Side.
Obama was not only in the audience, but also took the stage after one performance, participating in a panel discussion that was advertised in the poster for the play.

Andrew Breitbart, thank you.

Year of the Government Subsidized Woman

Obama, Savior of Women, has declared it Year of the Woman. Funny, we thought Pope Benedict had declared it the Year of Faith.

Whit Stillman was prescient in releasing his long awaited, new movie Damsels in Distress in the Year of the Government Subsidized Woman. Critic Terry Teachout has already given it thumbs up (unofficially, of course). He writes:

Here's a line from Damsels that I scribbled down on the fly, I hope accurately:
I adore optimism, even when it's absurd--perhaps especially then.

So perhaps in this Year of Faith we can still be optimistic that men ....and women.... will get off the government dole. Here's hoping. And here's the trailer....

The One Who Will Save Women - UPDATED

Forget the Dignity and Vocation of Women, President Obama will pay for your gas, mortgage and birth control bills.

Peggy Joseph: "I won't have to worry about  putting gas in my car. I won't have to worry about paying my mortgage. You know, if I help him, he's gonna help me."

30 year old Georgetown Law Student Sandra Fluke:
"Without insurance coverage, contraception, as you know, can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school. For a lot of students who, like me, are on public interest scholarships, that’s practically an entire summer’s salary"

One Man to Save Them All

Fight the HHS Mandate!

UPDATE -  The Hill is reporting that Obama has asked that he deliver the commencement address at  Barnard College (women's college in New York).

The White House called the college in recent days and offered up Obama as the commencement speaker and the college promptly accepted. Originally, New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson was set to address the graduates before the White House called the college.
Fight the HHS Mandate agenda!!

Today in Vichy Catholic News

The "Peace in Our Time" Jesuits of America Magazine preach accepting the Obama Administrations accommodation on the HHS Mandate. The editors want the US Bishops to stop getting mired down in the details.

Hmm... what would Ignatius do?

We aren't going link to the America article. However, here's Bishop William Lori's spot on response (he's the current USCCB Chairman on Religious Liberty). A snippet:

And didn’t President Obama promise adequate conscience protection in the reform of healthcare? But maybe it’s inappropriate for pastors of souls to ask why the entirely adequate accommodation of religious rights in healthcare matters that has existed in federal law since 1973 is now being changed.

Oh, and as Detective Colombo used to say: “Just one more thing.” It’s the comment in the editorial about when we bishops are at our best. Evidently, it’s when we speak generalities softly and go along to get along, even though for the first time in history the federal government is forcing church entities to provide for things that contradict church teaching. Maybe Moses wasn’t at his best when he confronted Pharaoh. Maybe the Good Shepherd was a bit off his game when he confronted the rulers of his day.

But those are just details.

Most Reverend William E. Lori

Why Go To Cuba?

Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, gives a good explanation to the puzzler, why are U.S. Bishops traveling to Cuba?

Why are we going? The Cuban bishops have said: "The Cuban people are one - wherever they are."  The Pope is traveling to Cuba to honor Cuba's patron saint, Our Lady of Charity, during the jubilee year of the 400th anniversary of her presence on the island nation. We travel in solidarity with the Church in Cuba - and in response to their invitation to share with them this historic event. The Pope travels to Cuba as a pilgrim of charity. We go to Cuba in the same spirit.

And here's a little more about Our Lady of Charity, who's anniversary is being celebrated by the Cuban people this year.

U.S. Version of the One Child Policy

According to Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius (a Catholic, by the way), the HHS Mandate is effectively the One Child Policy for the United States. She states,
"The reduction in the number of pregnancies compensates for cost of contraception"
Got that. Reduction of pregnancies. It's for the economy, stupid!
Does this remind you something? Vice President Joe Biden in China, when he said,
'Your policy has been one which I fully understand I’m not second-guessing — of one child per family."

Betrayal

Back to the question from the previous post, are we, too, betraying Christ?
Yesterday, 13 Catholic U.S. Senators voted against the Blunt Amendment (The Respect for Rights of Conscience Act).
